New EPA Certification Available at AASP/NJ’s NORTHEAST 2010 Automotive Services Show

The Alliance of Automotive Service Providers of New Jersey (AASP/NJ) will be providing shops the chance to get EPA certified for the new National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Paint Stripping and Miscellaneous Surface Coating Operations (40 CFR Part 63, Subpart HHHHHH) regulations at the 33rd annual NORTHEASTTM 2010 Automotive Services Show, March 19-21 at the Meadowlands Exposition Center (MEC) in Secaucus, NJ. The regulations require notification to EPA, training, spray booth and spray gun compliance as well as other efforts to come into compliance. For existing shops, the initial notification of operations is due to EPA by January 11, 2010 and the notification certifying compliance with the regulations is due by March 11, 2011.

“We are thrilled to be able to provide this training free of charge to not only our members, but to all who attend NORTHEASTTM 2010,” AASP/NJ President Jeff McDowell said. “We have lined up the EPA’s Deborah Craig to come out to the show; she will be doing both group and individual training throughout the weekend of the show.”

The regulations state that if shops spray-apply coatings to motor vehicles or mobile equipment, or if they use methylene chloride in their paint stripping operations, they are required to comply with the Federal EPA rule “Paint Stripping and Miscellaneous Surface Coating Operations” (40 CFR Part 63, Subpart HHHHHH). At NORTHEASTTM 2010, the EPA will provide an overview of the rule, assistance with filing the notification form and information on exemptions under the rule. This presentation is geared towards owners/operators and painters of collision repair shops. The EPA will issue training certificates to those completing the training (training on the rule is required for painters).

“This is a very important issue that many shops may not be aware of,” McDowell added, “and it’s another reason why NORTHEASTTM 2010 is the one industry event in our part of the country that is a must to attend. We are continually working to educate and train our industry. NORTHEASTTM 2010 allows us a great chance to do that. We hope everyone in the region takes advantage of this opportunity.”

NORTHEASTTM 2010 will take place March 19, 20 & 21st at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, NJ. For information regarding NORTHEASTTM 2010, please visit www.aaspnjnortheast.com. For more information about AASP/NJ, please visit www.aaspnj.org.
